It’s a well-known fact that we Spartans are descendants of Heracles which is self-evident buy the defining characteristics we share with him Extraordinary strength, courage, ingenuity, and sexual prowess. What is less known is that some of us are also chosen of Hades and I am among them. I am Pausanias, named so after the Spartan general who commanded all the free Greeks in the defeat of the Persian Empire 215 years ago at the battle of Plataea. There are many among our enemies that say that Sparta has been in decline ever since then, that we’re not the people we once were. In the last 107 years they’d be right. Ever since we were defeated at the battle of Leuctra our military strength has not been what it was. But I remind our enemies that were the supreme power in Greece until that Macedonian swine Philip and his pig son Alexander went on their world spanning conquest, though they never tried to conquer us. Now our star is in the ascendant again. Alexander is dead, his empire fractured but Sparta remains. Before I became one of the chosen of Hades I was a general in Sparta’s armies I won’t list here what I did to get there it was fairly standard for a Spartan and information on the agōgē and Spartan military service is well documented elsewhere. The action that got me noticed to be a chosen of Hades happened 8 years ago when I was 40 and Pyrrhus laid siege to Sparta, I was there with my portion of the phalanx, guarding one of the streets that entered into Sparta. We had two thousand men total as King Areus was away campaigning in Crete, so it was down to me, our current King Acrotatus and a few other generals with the two thousand men we had against Pyrrhus’s 26,000 and 24 elephants. I was deployed in one of the main thoroughfares through which his army would have to pass. I deployed the perioeci under my command in the front line the streets of Sparta herself anchoring their flanks, I instructed them that they must hold for at least an hour to tire and bloody the enemy after this hour they would be allow to make an ordered retreat and would be rewarded greatly if they carried out this duty, I also informed them if they routed they would fall to mine and my my Spartiates dory’s. Needless to say they didn’t rout and performed admirably for non-citizens. When they finally did retreat under my command the forces of Pyrrhus smashed into my Phalanx many becoming impaled on our dory’s as they were pushed in by the men behind them. Our formation didn’t buckle, it didn’t bend and it never took a step back. The women of Sparta themselves had become involved at this point seeing the press of bodies against the phalanx they took to the roof all across the city and started raining javelins, debris, roof tiles and whatever else they could get their hand on down upon the men of Pyrrhus. We weren’t gaining ground though just holding it and my phalanx resolutely stood there taking wave after wave of attack without once being pushed back. When finally tiredness was starting to set in and it looked like I may have to call the perioeci to the front again reinforcements arrived from Macedon, Pyrrhus realising he could not win here retreated and took his forces to Argos where he was killed. That night while my muscles were still aching and I was tending to a few grazes I was visited. One of the chosen of Hades came to me and told me that they had heard of my accomplishments that day, that Hades was pleased with the men I had sent to him and that I was to become one of the chosen of Hades blessed with eternal life. The Next night I underwent the ritual to make me one of the chosen of Hades. Since then I have joined the other chosen and together we have gone about setting a plan that will bring Sparta back into Supremacy in Greece.
So it is we have now allied with the Athenians to remove the power of Macedon from Greece, Ptolemy II Philadelphus has also pledge his help to us but wether that will materialise is another thing. Only one thing remains for me before I march with the armies to face Macedon…… I must consult to oracle of Delphi
